8-month-old Hong Hong has 31 digits – but no thumbs on either palm. He has now undergone the first of three surgical operations to correct his rare birth abnormalities. He was born to migrant workers in the the village of Zhongping in China.
He suffers from a severe case of polydactyly inherited from his mother who also has one extra finger on each hand, but Hong’s case is much more urgent as it will affect whether or not he can walk properly in the future.
The first phase of his treatment has already been completed at No. 6 Hospital of Ningbo City, with medics performing surgery on his feet. According to the hospital’s resident doctor, Xu Jihai, the operations will involve cutting off Hong’s extra fingers and toes and eventually reshaping his remaining digits.
